The AFR100 tree restoration project is funded by World Resources Institute (WRI) and is aimed at restoring 100 million hectares of land across Africa. This initiative is rightly contributing to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration which has nine (9) more years to restore the planet’s ecosystem thereby aiming to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems of every continent and in every ocean.
With Ghana as a member of the AFR100 initiative among the 31 African countries, the Institute of Green Growth Solution (IGGS) was among the top 20 organizations selected to champion this course. The Institute is working to restore 250 hectares of degraded land through Agroforestry and Reforestation in 2 regions in Ghana mainly Kokofu in the Ashanti Region. A total number of 250,000 trees made of 5 species will be planted and maintained within the time span. Obviously, the environmental and socio-economic benefits of the
project cannot be underestimated. Environmentally, the project will help improve air and water quality, soil health enrichment, better crop yields and help in mitigating climate change. Evidently, the socio-economic benefit is already being realized. Jobs created have
not only resulted in reducing poverty but have brought about improvement in livelihoods and empowering women and the vulnerable groups in these communities.
The Institute of Green Growth Solutions is looking for partners to expand existing reforestation and reverse land degradation efforts whilst creating Green Jobs for local communities.
